We have our corporation status and we are in the process of applying for our non-profit status. There is certainly an incredible need for animal welfare and rescue organizations down here in Southwest Virginia. We have adopted out over 80 animals in our first nine months. We are strictly comprised of foster homes and we take in dogs, cats, small pets and the occasional horse! We provide shelter, food, medical care, and adoption services for homeless and abandoned dogs and cats. These services are funded solely by private donations and adoption fees. At the SPCA, we treat our shelter pets with the same love and care we give our own, and that means providing them regular medical care, monthly heartworm and flea preventative and annual vaccinations. Our unique shelter provides a homelike environment that focuses on constantly improving our pets’ mental and physical well being to ensure they remain highly adoptable and happy while waiting for their new, forever families to find them. However, as a limited intake shelter we can only take the animals when we have space and staff to care for them. This means that sometimes when a owner calls to surrender their pet, we simply cannot take them. A sad fact is that the SPCA cannot adopt out pets as fast as cats and dogs are being produced. Remember, nationwide, only half of all animals coming into shelters are able to be adopted out or returned to owners. The real roadblock to a no-kill society is pet overpopulation. When you are looking for a new pet, adopt one from a shelter or rescue and support the spay/neuter of all cats and dogs. See pets needing homes at SPCA-Eastern Shore Inc. SPCA Eastern Shore 26528 Lankford Hwy. NORTHUMBERLAND Richmond Westmoreland Lancaster Maryland Northumberland County Animal Shelter Heathsville, VA 22473 Since November 1, 2001, the Animal Control Program for Northumberland County has been under the direct supervision of the Northumberland County Sheriff. Recognizing the rural county needed assistance with adoption of animals we encourage the help of volunteers, headed by Fran Warren. Volunteers operate a "yard sale" in Lottsburg, VA to fund the medical needs of the animals in the shelter. The sale has been so successful it has funded cat condos, new puppy crates for the smaller dogs and other animal care needs of the shelter. Under the dedicated leadership of both the Sheriff and the Animal Control Officer, the volunteers clean kennels, socialize animals, assist with administrative duties and operate the adoption program for both cats and dogs. Virginia State Law requires that all animals adopted from this facility be spayed or neutered. Other than for residents of Northumberland, Westmoreland, Richmond or Lancaster Counties, any animal adopted from this facility must be spayed or neutered before the new adopter takes possession of the animal. Arrangements for spaying or neutering can be made through the local veterinarians. No animal will be "shipped" from this shelter. You must personally visit the shelter. Northumberland County Animal Shelter 11703 Northumberland Highway Heathsville, VA 22473 The shelter is located on State Route 360 east of Heathsville.
