Second Chance Dog Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit dog rescue. We receive no government funding to run our organization, and we rely on the generosity of the public to keep our doors open. Please consider adopting or donating today. Second Chance Dog Rescue dogs are housed in foster homes until well matched and carefully screened forever homes can be found. Each dog is examined by a vet and then spayed or neutered, brought up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped and heartworm checked before being placed in their new homes. When time permits, our dogs are also housetrained and taught basic obedience.

The Regional Center receives stray and owner relinquished animals from Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and the Town of Vinton. The Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection serves the City of Roanoke, the Counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton, and is an “open intake facility”. The Regional Center primarily handles stray animals picked up by the Animal Control Officers employed by the municipalities, but also accepts strays found, and animals owned, by citizens of the municipalities.

Potential adopters must live in Southampton County or adjacent municipalities to adopt unaltered pets unless willing to wait for the pet to be spay/neutered prior to adoption if living outside of Southampton County. All pets adopted from Southampton County receive a FREE spay/neuter voucher for the Mobile Clinic. There is no adoption fee at this time but owners are required to spay/neuter their pet within 30-days of adoption as well as vaccinate against Rabies and acquire county/city dog licensing.

The Spotsylvania Animal Shelter is a county shelter operated Spotsylvania County Animal Control under the requirements of the Code of the Virginia. Animals are held in accordance with state requirements, and are redeemed by the owner, adopted, or euthanized. Our shelter has been on a NO KILL Mission since September of 2013. The shelter also houses a low cost spay/neuter clinic, which is operated by a local humane organization. All dogs and cats adopted from the shelter are sterilized within 30 days from the date of adoption, with the exception of puppies and kittens that are too young.

Adopting a dog

Adoption fee for a dog is $50 which includes spay/neuter and rabies vaccination. Payment is by cash or check - we cannot accept card payments at this time. For animals that have not been spayed or neutered: adoptions are open to residents of Tazewell, Buchanan, Russell, Bland and Smyth County. If an animal is already spayed or neutered then it is available to be adopted by anyone (even out of state residents). Phone to check that the dog is available and what paperwork is required from you.

We welcome enquiries from potential adopters and animal rescues. If you are not a resident of Wythe County or one of the adjacent counties, contact your local rescue to see if they will rescue the dog for you. Please phone about a specific dog rather than e-mail which may not be read in time. For information regarding the dog featured, please contact Wythe County Animal Control NOW on (276) 228-6003. We keep stray dogs 5 days so that the owner can claim them but you can express an interest before the 'available' date. The date the dog is listed as 'available' is NOT the day it will be put down but we may only keep the dog for 5 days after the 'available' date.
